Roman Forum
From the Colosseum, pass through the Via Sacra and enter the heart of the Roman Empire. The Roman Forum was once the religious, political, and commercial center of Rome. The Forum Magnum, or just the Forum, as it was referred to in its heyday, hosted nearly all forms of business - commerce, prostitution, judicial decisions, and more. Therefore history unfolds on a grand scale as you walk in the steps of Caesar, Roman Senators, and Vestal Virgin priestesses. You could spend days in this immense array of temples, arches, basilicas, and walking paths. One of which is the Regia which was originally the residence of the kings of Rome or at least their main headquarters, and later the office of the Pontifex Maximus, a high priest of Roman religion.

Fun Facts

  • When the great days of the Roman Empire were over, the Forum became forgotten, and was used as a cattle pasture during the Middle Ages.

  • The arc of Septimius Severus was within the Forum during its underground years. The part of the arc that stuck out of the ground was used as a barber shop.
