Arenal Observatory Lodge was built in 1987 as a research station for scientists from the Smithsonian Institute to study the 4,000-year-old Arenal Volcano. Located in a safe zone at the foot of the volcano, this lodge offers a close and spectacular view of the volcano.

Interesting Activities:

  • Students use professional equipment at Arenal Observatory Lodge to measure volcanic activity.
  • At the lodge, students visit the museum to learn about reconstruction, species regeneration, and changes in soil chemistry, mineralogy, and other topics being studied by scientists at Arenal.

Did you know?

  • In geological terms, this 4,000-year-old volcano is relatively young.
  • This lodge is protected from the volcano by a deep gorge of the Agua Caliente River.
